5 Reasons to Go Greek

Image
Although I have lived in Dallas for almost 10 years now, my family is originally from suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. My parents, aunts, uncles, and older cousins have all attended college in the north, where Greek life is nothing like it is down south. When I decided I wanted to stay south for school, recruitment was something I started to consider. I was not a legacy anywhere, and nobody I had known was a part of Greek life. In fact, because of the national stereotypes of Greek life, I was hesitant in my decision. I decided to rush because I wanted the opportunity to meet people, as I was coming to school so far from home. Here are 5 reasons why I am so incredibly glad I decided to go Greek.  1. I have absolutely met my best friends being a part of the Greek community. Not only have I formed lasting friendships with people in my own sorority, but I have met so many people in other organizations as well that have allowed me to grow a larger network here at UGA.  2. Being a

18 Year Olds Don't Know Everything

There were several things I was unsure of coming into college, but picking my major was never an unknown. After years of sitting in a classroom and learning various versions of math, science, english, and history, I was excited to study something new and interesting, something that I could find a career in. I was the type of person that preferred a career that I was passionate about, over a career that I hated but that I could make a lot of money in. So, as I looked at where I wanted to go and what I wanted to study, I decided on psychology at UGA. Both of my parents have led very traditional careers in banking, finance, and accounting and naturally did not understand why I would choose to spend 4 years studying psychology, when all it would get me is more school and no guarantee of a job following graduation. I fought back, despite their urge to get me to switch to a business degree. I knew that it was my decision and it was going to be the driving factor in how I would be spending

12 Hours on I-20

As a junior in high school, I weirdly hated doing college tours. I swear my parents dragged me from campus to campus and I couldn't find one I really loved. It was Christmas time and I was over in Florida visiting family. Much to my dismay, we drove all the way from Texas to Florida, just so we could do more college visits along the way. The University of Georgia had never been on my radar, and it was just another campus I knew I was being dragged to. However, as I walked down Clayton Street, ate at Last Resort, toured through North Campus, something clicked in me that I hadn't felt at any other school. Next thing I know, I'm in an information session, convincing myself that the 1 campus I love is way too hard of a school for me to get into. Needless to say, I applied anyway and the day I got into UGA is a day I'll never forget.  Past all the excitement of getting accepted, of picking out bedding and dorm room decorations, of preparing packets and picking out o

Journey to the South

As I approach my 10th year as a resident of the south, there are a few things that come to mind about the transition, all mostly hilarious. As a very sheltered 6th grader, naturally the thought of moving from Michigan to Texas was life-altering and scary. Add on the fact that just about everyone from the north stereotypes Texas as the place where you wear cowboy boots everywhere and ride your horse to school, and you could say I was dreading the move. Thinking back on the last 10 years, I have thought of 10 things that I couldn't be more thankful for, 10 reasons I would never go back north.  1. The weather, duh. (I can wear shorts on Christmas)  2. Despite what people say (and the attached photo), no, I do not own a horse nor wear cowboy boots THAT often... 3. Friday Night Lights - there is nothing better than Texas football 4. Southern Hospitality - yes, there is a noticeable difference between the north and the south 5. "Y'all" is so much better than
